The Academic Discovery Program is designed for students who desire a college-preparatory education, but require additional academic support. This program will include our Summer Enrichment Program, a Learning Lab course, reading and math assistance from the I.U., peer tutoring, and classroom accommodations if possible. The program includes but is not limited to the following:
Summer Enrichment
Students recommended for the program will be required to participate in the Summer Enrichment Program which includes a Reading/Language Arts course and a Mathematics course. The summer courses will meet for four weeks, two hours per day beginning in mid-June. Each student will be evaluated by the instructors at the conclusion of the classes. Final recommendations will be made at that time.
Learning Lab
The Learning Lab course will be a full year, credit course where student will receive a grade. The Lab will take the place of a Foreign Language during the freshman year. The goal of the Lab is to assist students in the program to develop the necessary skills and strategies for academic success at Central Catholic High School. Strategies/Skills to be covered: Planning & Organization, Memory Skills, Note Taking, Study Skills, Test Taking Skills, Public Speaking. Students can be scheduled out of the Lab course once they maintained a 2.25 grade point average for 4 consecutive quarters. The Lab course is not intended to taking the place of the Intermediate Unit or any tutoring programs.
Other Accommodations
Classroom accommodations will be considered on an individual basis. Central Catholic High School is not required to honor Individual Education Plans or Psychological Evaluations. Any accommodations must be approved by the Director of the Academic Discovery Program and the classroom teacher(s). Any student who has indicated that a diagnosed learning problem exists must provide the proper documentation to Central Catholic High School so that accommodations can be made during national testing (Iowa tests, PSAT, SAT, etc.)
Additional Support
Central Catholic High School has and will continue to offer support program such as Reading & Math support from the Intermediate Unit, peer tutoring, and guidance office resources.
